“All my lovers will be pink and elephantine…”

“And you're standing at the chemist in Boots
Coughing up your guts like you're at death’s door
All this for a packet of Do-Dos
And the assistant gives you a wink and you turn bright red
It's at time like this that you wish you were dead
And you take the whole packet and you feel like you've drunk
A bottle of bleach
And you tell yourself 'Never, never again
Well, not until next week anyway'
And you were never one for holding drink
And you stagger off to the toilet
And you throw up like it was Christmas
And you miss the bowl and you hit your shoes
And there's no paper towels
Now what else can go wrong for you
It's a choice between a cab fare home
And a packet of cigarettes
So you choose and the money sticks
In the machine and the manager says
'Tough shit - drink up and leave'”

There is a lot of good music about at the moment and all of the following are either relatively new, or new to me. I make no apologies for the inclusion of Har Mar Superstar and do not claim him as a ‘guilty pleasure’ - he is brilliant. "...and if you need 'em - I got crazy prophylactics..."

Just to prove that in my universe it is not all wearing black and listening to icy electronica any more than it is about psychedelics and ‘smoky beats’, (as a friend had suggested - thanks D) I had been intending to post some 90s style RnB/Hip-Hop and suddenly stumbled on to the fantastic
Playing With Vibes blog who had posted a mix which totally did it for me and rendered my own pretty obsolete. Special thanks to Step One and DJ Mystery for allowing me to share this with you.

“It seemed as if the streets had melted…”

Taking Theraflu and whiskey to make mixes to be sick to.

Everyone seems to be ill at the moment – my family (bar one) has just been through the ‘apparently-not-swine-flu-but-unknown-type-of-flu-bug’. This mix was created in a fevered state with not much recollection other than vague sparks of hazy memory when I viewed the play-list in the morning. Luckily it has stood up to the ‘commute-test’ - so here it is in all it's delirious glory…

“Ding a ding a dang a dong dong ding dong…”

There is so much to hate about cars – the amount of money that is spent on them, the soaring cost of fuel and of course the carbon emissions. Road rage (including that awful song.), boy racers, PT Cruisers and stretch limo’s full of pikey gobshites. Add to this arseholes trying to manoeuvre an oversized SUV around narrow country lanes, “warning – naughty little person on board” stickers and Jeremy Fucking Clarkson to name but a few are things relating to them that get my blood pressure shooting through gaping holes in the ozone.

On the other hand late night city driving with some good tunes is one of life’s greatest pleasures; still, you can’t let it get to you eh?

BUFFALO TOM – GOING UNDERGROUND
STEPHEN DUFFY – EUCHARIST
CLIENTELE – NEVER ANYONE BUT YOU
TRICKY VS GRAVEDIGGAZ – TONITE IS A SPECIAL NITE

“They pulled her from a ditch last night somewhere down on 95…”

I cannot believe it has taken me this long to post a Virgin Prunes track. What a great band they were and if you ever get the opportunity to see Gavin Friday live jump at the chance; you will not be disappointed.

Also, I cannot believe I have posted a Yo La Tengo track; I was always rather indifferent to them but find their new album to be an absolute corker – well worth a listen. Otherwise I do hope you enjoy Morton Valence (who have a very nice debut album out now at an indie record shop near you) and especially the criminally underrated Scud Mountain Boys.

GODIEGO – BIRTH OF THE OF THE ODYSSEY (MONKEY THEME)

"My fellow Americans. I have today signed legislation that would outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

Another long lost gem that I stumbled onto at the magnificent Fantod Under Glass blog – do go there, you won't regret it. I bought this the day it was released in 1984 (I think) and have loved it since. My vinyl has long since become too wrecked to play as it was a party fave for a long time and now wears it’s battle-scars with pride, and my cassette copy is wearing out. If anyone knows of a good copy at a sexy bitrate please let me know…

"You may slice with no conviction, blind revenge on a blameless victim..."

A superb compilation for y’all, and I do apologise if I am getting stuck in an early 80s rut of late but senility is setting in and as I enter my dotage I find myself travelling back in time to slimmer, less grey-haired days when the only worries were which party to go to.

This was found over at The Commercial Zone which is certainly well worth you visiting and having a dig around. The great Wedginaldinho will be getting sniffy that it is not the superior 7" version of Knife Slits Water; if you prefer that - and he is right - it can be found on a previous compilation in the archives.

2. Coup - 23 Skidoo
3. To Hell With Poverty - Gang Of Four

"All I want is to just have fun, live my life like it's just begun..."

Fuck Michael Jackson - popular music lost a real legend yesterday with the passing of Sky "Sunlight" Saxon of The Seeds. One of the most righteous performers ever and who (as far as I can tell) never did anything 'odd' with children.

This week's compilation is Volume One of the seminal Nuggets series, (just in case anyone does not have it). If you want more all are posted on the fantastic

“What the hell went wrong in the Garden of Eden…?”

Probably my favourite record label of all time, el records is dreadfully hard to describe. A clichĂ©d attempt is that it is ‘what should have been in the top 20 when Patrick McGoohan was doing his damnedest to escape from Portmerion in The Prisoner TV show’. Bear in mind that this came out in the late 80s and early 90s and you will understand how wonderfully out of time it sounded in those years prior to the reevaluation of ‘lounge’ and ‘easy listening’.

Defiantly ‘indie’ but perfectly pop, yearning for hits but left-field and ‘arty’, obviously intelligent but never too serious. (Just look at the band names. They had me hooked before I heard a note.) It was massive in Japan, acclaimed in certain parts of the UK press but was totally ignored by most of the record buying public who seemed to think it was being ‘too clever’ or ‘ironic’. Also it was my first introduction to the fabulous
Momus

And the artwork, Oh the artwork was fantastic which is always a clincher for me. In particular the pictures of Julia Gilbert (Anthony Adverse) in fencing gear but that was pure lust rather than artistic merit.

Mike Alway – the founder and the labels very heart and soul can pop round my house for a glass or two any day. Check out the el story on the Cherry Red website where much of their work is reissued and available to buy.

"The ghost of electricity howls..."

I was recently introduced to the truly wonderful Ghost Box label by Nolan Micron of the Castles in Space blog and was blown away by the stunning body of work they have put out. Having planned to put together a compilation of my fave tracks I come across this beautiful mix from http://www.bosbos.net/ and recommend it to all - a hearty thank you to BosBos for allowing me to share this with you and I urge you all to take a trip over to his world to find out more.

Here is BosBos:

BosBos - The Mind Bridge (a Ghost Box Tribute.)

Over the past half a decade or so, the
Ghost Box label has quietly been carving a path into the strangest of musical territory. Reminiscent of the sounds found in hoary educational school films, or creepy eighties BBC shows like Chocky, much of the label’s output readily falls into the self-imposed genre known as ‘Hauntology’. Throw in some carefully inspired artwork by prominent graphic designer (and label founder) Julian House, and the authentic sense of nostalgia is complete. The Mind Bridge is a culmination of the twisted minds who frequent the GB roster, such as The Advisory Circle, Belbury Poly, The Focus Group and so on. Step into the other world of Ghost Box - and you may never return quite the same again.

The Focus Group - Dancing Horse (Logotone)
The Advisory Circle - Sundial
Belbury Poly - The Hidden Door
The Focus Group - Salty Sun Tales
Belbury Poly - Pan’s Garden
The Advisory Circle - Mogadon Coffee Morning
The Focus Group - Pan Calling
Belbury Poly - The Moonlawn
The Advisory Circle - Civil Defence Is Common Sense
Belbury Poly - Remember Tomorrow
Mount Vernon Arts Lab - Warminster 4
The Focus Group - Starry Wisdom
Belbury Poly - Time Scale
The Focus Group - Shining Stone (Logotone)
Belbury Poly - Owls And Flowers
The Advisory Circle - Hocusing For Beginners
The Focus Group - The Harmony Programme
Belbury Poly - Lord Belbury’s Folly
Belbury Poly - A Warning
Eric Zann - Voolas
The Focus Group - Reflected Message

“...she wanted more drugs and maybe me...”

When I became captain of the town, I decided to extend asylum to certain citizens who were persona non grata elsewhere in the area because of their disgusting and disquieting deformities. One was known as Spare Ass Annie. She had an auxiliary asshole in the middle of her forehead like a painful bronze eye. Another was a scorpion from the neck down. He had retained the human attribute of voice, and was given to revolting paroxysms of self-pity and self-disgust during which he threatened to kill himself by a sting in the back of his neck. He never threatened anyone else, though his sting would have caused instant death.

INTRO – PETER WYNGARDE
PURE – SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES
SPARE ASS ANNIE – WILLIAM BURROUGHS AND THE DISPOSABLE HEROES...
A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE – SCRITTI POLITTI

I HOPE I DIDNT JUST GIVE AWAY THE ENDING – NEW RADICALS

“...you risk being crucified by those you are unlike...”

From the ashes of C-86 came the wonderful Sarah Records. Songs about love, loss, lust and yearning for kids who mourned the death of Postcard. The bands were described as ‘twee’, ‘shambling’, ‘jingle-jangle’ or as @ would describe it ‘wimp rock’. In other words all the ingredients for classic, intelligent pop.

If Belle and Sebastian had been around ten years earlier they would have been on Sarah.

"Fa diddly ah..."

So St Patrick was a Welshman, but might have been a Roman, a Gaul or even - God forbid - English. He converted the indiginous Druidic types to the good word of Christianity using a shamrock and chased all the snakes out of Ireland from the top of Cruach Phádraig with nothing but a stick - all so people can paint their faces green, and knock back a few extra 'Arthurs'.

Fair play to the lad.

So in honour of this tradition here are a few treats to get your party started.

Christy Moore - Live at the Point.

The Pogues - Just Look them in the Eye and Say Pogue Mahone.

Dedicated to friends and family, present and missing.

"Watch the steps. Get a drink, have a good time now..."

The Avalanches - After the Goldrush.

(Not to be confused with Neil Young's awful album of the same name - he is an overrated shitehawk with the worst haircut ever. On the other hand The Avalanches are absolute genius and should be cherished.)

In 2008, a mix CD appeared by The Avalanches titled "After the Goldrush". The album is a mashup of 42 songs in different styles and from different eras. The inside cover includes a mini-history of the band and announces that this album "fills the gap for all of The Avalanches junkies out there, a mad mix of eclectic musical inspirations pieced together in a totally unique and off the wall way, it shouldn't work, but it does in a bizarre way that only these antipodean mavericks know how... And remember, The Avalanches wouldn't give a 'Castlemaine Four-X' for anything else." There is a small picture of the band that sits behind the CD. There is no booklet and no credits for the songs or the band aside from the notes in the inside cover. Copies are scarce but can be found in rare record stores, several online outlets, and eBay.

There is also a theory that this is just an older mix re-named. Who cares - it is great.
